A Man Called Otto Plot
The movie stars Tom Hanks as the grumpy old man which is very surprising as he is considered Hollywood’s nicest guy. The question is whether he is able to pull this off, we will soon find out. The movie is a wholesome movie with various emotions into play and is moving at times. You can watch this movie with your family on New Year and have a good time.
Coming to the story, A Man called Otto is an light hearted, funny and moving film about how life can change and take a completely different turn when you allow people to come into your life. The basic plot of the movie remains close to the premise of the novel. Otto Anderson is an old grumpy man who is figuring out ways to commit suicide in order to join his dead wife.
The movie opens with Otto going about his daily routine. He yells at a woman for letting her dog urinate on his lawn, a truck driver for parking her truck in the driveway. He dislikes the neighbor who exercises in a skintight outfit and a cat who shows up on his door often. He even argues with a clerk at a hardware store for a few cents as he feels that the price is too much for the length of the rope.
He often goes to lay flowers on the grave of his deceased wife and that’s where he shows a little bit of his emotional side and cribs about the big bad world out there. He is cranky and doesn’t like anything that happens against his wishes which is why everyone around sees him as his enemy. Then, he meets his new neighbors, Marisol (Mariano Trevino) and Tommy (Manuel Garcia Rulfo), a young couple who have two daughters and expecting another child.
Life takes an unexpected turn when despite resisting Marisol’s efforts to be friendly, Otto starts getting involved in his new neighbors’ life and opens his heart to them. Marisol sends a delicious meal to him as a gesture but because of the way he is, in his thank-you note he could only describe it as “interesting”. However, Marisol doesn’t believe in Otto’s ways and barges into his life bringing liveliness in his life. Soon, Otto starts babysitting the kids and starts teaching Marisol how to drive.
We also see flashbacks of Otto’s life, how he met his wife Sonya (Rachel Keller) on a train station when she dropped her book and Otto ran to the other side of the platform and fell in love with her instantly. The couple move into the home where Otto lives now. Sonya gets pregnant and tragically loses the baby in an accident and is confined to a wheelchair for the rest of her life. Young Otto is played by TrueMan Hanks (Tom Hanks’ son) who looks unbelievably like him.
A Man Called Otto Review
The movie gives a nice vibe and is light hearted that reminds us of the good within us. Tom Hanks portrayal of a grumpy old man is subtle and does not feel overdramatic at any point. However, the breakout performance is by Trevino, a Mexican star who brings energy and liveliness to the movie. She doesn’t believe in Otto’s way of thinking and ultimately we get to see Otto’s emotional side and that fact that he is too a good human being. The movie tries to give the message that there is hope after all and one must never cease to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
