Lady Chatterley’s Lover Plot
In Laure De Clermont Tonnerre’s Netflix adaptation of the classic novel set on an estate in the English countryside, Emma Corrin (who played Princess Diana in Season 4 of “The Crown”) plays a sensitive and independent young woman Constance Reid or Connie who is married to a baronet Sir Lord Clifford Chatterley (Matthew Duckett). He is also a soldier who is about to go off to war.
After he returns from First World War, he is paralyzed from the waist down and is bound to a chair. She becomes the mistress of the estate and buckles down under the lack of emotional and physical warmth and Clifford is not bothered about the condition of Connie. However, he wants to have a heir to carry on the Chatterley name and is ok with Connie having a secret affair with a suitable class to get pregnant and have a child whom they can raise as their own.
She then meets Oliver Mellors (Jack O’Connell) who is a newly hired gamekeeper for the estate and is immediately attracted to him. Their affair crosses all limits and boundaries of class even as rumors begin to start and reach the ears of Clifford. The movie shows a lot of nudity and sexual scenes between Connie and Oliver and repeated use of swear words. Corrin and Connell have an intense chemistry and a passionate love affair that seems uninhibited as they run naked in the wild. Their relationship also signifies the freedom that one craves against class and hierarchy as both belong to opposite sides of the class system.
Lady Chatterley’s Lover Summary
The Netflix adaptation is much more than just a romantic drama. The characters are complex and there are different layers to each of them. Connie is shown to be a progressive woman who craves for freedom from this emotionless marriage and society’s rigid class system. O’Connell delivers an outstanding performance of a man who is mistreated by his employer, Clifford as he belongs to the working class. The movie gives a frank description of the female pleasure which is why the novel was considered ahead of it’s time and in other words obscene. When Connie yells at Clifford saying “You and your ruling class!!” making clear about her feelings about the classism and oppression she faces everyday.
Lady Chatterley’s Lover Ending
In the end, instead of hiding it, Connie confronts Clifford about her pregnancy and expresses her desire to be with Oliver. Clifford however refuses to divorce her and fires Oliver which forces Connie to also leave. After some time, they both are reunited hopefully without societal constraints.
